pvtMartins' Tank Armor Comparison

I noticed lots of people don't really understand how the armor system in this game works, so i'll try to make it a bit clearer.

Armor is devided in 3 sections:

  • Frontal armor = The armor at the front of your tank. The front of your tank is the most armored. Always try to keep this side pointed at the enemy.
  • Side armor = The armor at the side of your tank. The side is less armored then the front but most of the time it's more armored then the rear of your tank. Only point this side to the enemy if you really have to.
  • Rear armor = The least armored part of your tank is the rear most of the time. I say "most of the time" because with some tanks, the side is the weakest. The German Pzkpfw 35t and its Russian counterpart the T-50, for example. Keep the rear turned away from the enemy at all times or your tank will blow up in seconds

The armor value is displayed like this:

"thickness of the armor" (millimeters mm) @ "angle of the armor" (degrees °)

For example : 30 @ 68. So, this means armor of 30 mm at an angle of 68 °

Most armor is sloped (at an angle). The lower the angle, the higher the protection with the same armor thickness. For example: 30 mm armor at 35 degrees will be a lot more protective then 30mm armor at 90 degrees. After all, if the shell from a direct straight shot (and this is very important, it has to be a straight horizontal shot) hits the armor at 35°, it will have to penetrate much more armor then when the armor is angled at 90°

I'll give an even better example: 53mm armor at 30° has the same protection value as 100mm armor at 90°. I call this "relative armor thickness"

I'll explain "relative armor thickness" with an image:
  • The green arrow is the absolute armor thickness
  • The black arrow is the relative armor thickness

You can clearly notice the black arrow is much longer than the green arrow.

I've made a comparisation-table that displays the relative armor thickness of each tank for the front, side and rear armor.

WARNING: This table is only accurate to compare armor protection against a direct straight shot (from tanks, tank destroyers and assault guns). Self propelled guns (artillery) use indirect fire and have a different effect on armor. Because the shells land at an angle as well, it's impossible for me to calculate the protection against indirect fire.

I've currently only calculated the relative armor for the tanks from level 1 to 7 for both nations. I might do the other tanks as well, but this will be for later. This list should already help you compare the light tanks of both nations

If you used armor upgrades and want to calculate your relative armor thickness, you can do this with this tool (Thanks to Jetu)

I hope this helps understand the way armor works in this game. If anyone has any questions, i'll try my best to help you.
Also, any suggestions to improve this guide will be appreciated.
